Clarke County 9-1-1 Center

General Information

The Clarke County 9-1-1 center took their first live 9-1-1 call May 09, 2001. Clarke County is served by an Enhanced 9-1-1 System. The name, address and phone number of the telephone used to dial 9-1-1 is displayed on a computer screen at the 9-1-1 center. The 9-1-1 Center is located on the third floor of the Clarke County Courthouse at 114 Court Street Grove Hill, Alabama. Clarke County 9-1-1 is partially funded by a surcharge on telephone service. The citizens voted to create a 9-1-1 system and agreed to pay 5% of their basic phone service rate to provide funding. This money is collected by the phone companies as a separate charge on your phone bill and is forwarded to Clarke County 9-1-1 each month. From this revenue we pay salaries and operational expenses. Wireless phones or cell phone service customers, pay 70 cents per month to help cover the expense of handling their calls. 9-1-1 is a free call to cellular customers, and will not be billed for the minutes used during your call for help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect when dialing 9-1-1 from a cell phone?
Most cell phones display your phone number depending on the wireless carrier. Cell phones are not as precise as a traditional telephone and you should be prepared to give a location if you call from a cell phone.

What if I call from a cell phone and do not know my exact location?
With some wireless calls, our new mapping system will pinpoint the caller’s position.

How will the dispatcher know what agency to call for the emergency being reported?
By combining location information with questions asked for the caller, the Call-Taker determines which emergency agency, or agencies, should respond to the scene. The department or departments are then notified by the dispatcher to respond to the said emergency.

Over 95% of calls are dispatched within 90 seconds of being answered.
