What if an emergency situation arose in Clarke County affecting all or portions of the county?
- Wouldn't you want to know immediately about this situation, as soon as local government knows about it, without having to wait until the next time you turn on a TV or radio?
- Wouldn't you want to know how such an emergency might affect you, your family and friends, and what action you should take?
Thanks to some remarkable technology, the Clarke County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) can now call you - and everyone else affected by an emergency - at any telephone number or numbers you give us and let you know immediately what's happening.
That technology is called CodeRED, an emergency notification system capable of placing up to 60,000 telephone calls per hour. It enables Clarke County EMA to deliver a pre-recorded message telling residents and businesses about the situation and what action needs to be taken, if any. CodeRED technology is so sophisticated that you would get a call only if a particular emergency affects you.
To ensure we have the latest information we will need to call you, we very strongly encourage all residents and businesses to register for CodeRED, particularly those who have unlisted phone numbers, those who have changed their phone number or address within the last year and those who use a cellular phone as their home phone.
It's easy to register: Just click on the CodeRED icon above, and follow the instructions.
The system works with cellular phones but requires a Clarke County street address. People who have recently moved in the county but kept the same listed or unlisted number will need to update their address in the database. When entering information, please fill out all of the screens. The newest data entered will replace the old data.
If you see "999 - 911- 9999" appear on your Caller-id make sure to pick up your phone - it could be life saving information from the Clarke County Emergency Management Agency or Clarke County 911.
CodeRED will be used for situations that might call for action like evacuation, sheltering in place, traffic alerts, closed streets, boiling potentially contaminated water, or calling the Police if you should see a missing child or adult.
For more information about CodeRED, call the Clarke County Emergency Management Office, 251-275-8775 or Clarke County 911 Office 251-275-1091.
Press Release
Emergency Management Coordinator
Clarke County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has contracted with Emergency Communications Network, Inc., of Ormond Beach, Florida, for its "CodeRED" high-speed telephone emergency notification services. The CodeRED system gives county officials the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification/information messages to targeted areas or the entire county.
Roy Waite, Clarke County Emergency Management Agency Director, cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone database supporting them. "If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called". The CodeRED system not only offers fast calling rates and improved message delivery, it gives individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly to the system's telephone database. Waite emphasized that this is an extremely important feature.
To ensure no one is omitted, Waite urges all individuals and businesses to log onto the Clarke County website, www.clarkecountyal.com, and follow the link to Emergency Notification System "CodeRED". Those without Internet access may call Clarke County EMA at 251-275-8775, Monday through Friday, (8AM-5PM) to give their information over the phone. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number, additional phone numbers (optional).
No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included, Waite said. All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the last year, and who use a cellular phone as their primary home phone.
Waite explained that the "CodeRED system is a geographical based notification system, which means street addresses are needed to select which phone numbers will receive emergency notification calls in any given situation. The system works fine for cell phones too, but we have to have a street address". People who have recently moved but kept the same listed or unlisted phone number also need to change their address in the database.
Waite stated, "CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for doing so. The information will only be used for emergency notification purposes".
Questions should be directed to the Clarke County Emergency Management Office, 251-275-8775.
